Lab II: Berny responds to Mark's piece

in response to Mark's writing: Words Fail Me
Images Fail Me
Take 1

Images Fail Me
Take 2 - one of the projectors kept stopping in second half of this video

Some things not apparent in the video recording of this projection performance:

  • reflections that hit on the walls or ceiling.
  • the disco ball effect where it was almost like the cow's mouth was consuming the scratches from the other film as it funneled into the frame.
  • some of the flicker [where it rolls dim and bright] comes from the fact that film is 24 frames per second and video is 29.97 [even video called "24P"], so the shutters never line up perfectly.
  • sometimes the video goes out of focus due to the auto focus not knowing what to do.
  • I cut out the couple times that the projector stuck and I had to re-thread the projector and start again.
Here's audio of just the projector. It's one minute long with a variety of stopping / starting / threading / swearing [link].

Wow, Berny, this is amazing! Thank you so much for posting. It really does open up a lot of possibilities in terms of what we can do with projections: bringing not only the image on the film to life, but bringing the projection itself to life.

It's great to see these performances of yours again from the Lab. I love the super-imposing of the two images of you against the cabin using the two projectors, and all of the other interplay between the two projections. Also, the distortions of the images are delightful and full of potential!

For me this brings film, a medium of constancy (i.e. the image on the screen never changes) into the world of live performance/theatre in its fluidity, malleability, and potential for error.

Thank you!!!
