Kinetic Sculpture by a friend

This is quite an amazing sculpture installation that a friend of mine in California worked on. It struck me immediately as an example of the sense of movement and multiplicity that I am envisioning for the end image of the show -- although I would like the insects to be replaced by reflective shards hit by lights/headlamps/flashlights or Berny's projector beam and casting lights all around the space.

Hmmm.... anyone know a good kinetic engineer??

Images Fail Me
Take 2 - one of the projectors kept stopping in second half of this video

Some things not apparent in the video recording of this projection performance:

  • reflections that hit on the walls or ceiling.
  • the disco ball effect where it was almost like the cow's mouth was consuming the scratches from the other film as it funneled into the frame.
  • some of the flicker [where it rolls dim and bright] comes from the fact that film is 24 frames per second and video is 29.97 [even video called "24P"], so the shutters never line up perfectly.
  • sometimes the video goes out of focus due to the auto focus not knowing what to do.
  • I cut out the couple times that the projector stuck and I had to re-thread the projector and start again.
Here's audio of just the projector. It's one minute long with a variety of stopping / starting / threading / swearing [link].

ASL and Signing aids online

These websites feature links to hundreds of short Quicktime movies, searchable alphabetically, that illustrate a number of singular signs used in ASL. Great bookmarks for some quick look-ups for those of us who are just learning about this amazing language.

This old ASL Browser website has been around awhile...

Joanne also directed me to this Signing Savvy website, which seems to be an improvement on the ASL Browser in many ways.

Note that ASL is a language with its own grammar and syntax; using these signs in place of English words within the grammatical structure of English is not the same as speaking American Sign Language, but is actually what is known in the Deaf community as 'signing English' which is not really too popular! ;)

Still, I have found it useful to gain insight into how signs are formed using various hand-shapes. For example, check out the "R" hand-shape: first two fingers crossed. Now see the sign for "flower" and compare with the sign for "rose." The sign for "rose" is the sign for "flower," signed with an "R" hand-shape.

Joanne, if you have any other/better links with videos, please feel free to share!

If the embedded links above don't work, copy/paste these into your navigation bar:

The Big Living - story excerpts

Hey everyone --

This is a wild adventure, wow. It's been very hard to dig into this stuff but what a gift you all are! The support and excitement and creative energy that circles around this project is jaw-dropping. I feel so privileged and honoured to be able to work with such incredible artists, all willing to take risks and adventure into the unknown with me!

Also, Anne Bogart gave me some good direction in her suggestion of separating my own personal experience from manifesting the material as theatre/art, so I am getting my feet under me again (even if sometimes I am at a loss for words!)

Here are links to a pdf and a word doc of some compiled writings from the throes of those days that sort of outline the story as it happened, and the final resolution that I am still living with -- that everything is one, the Big Living and the Big Dying are all one and the same.

This might be a solid end-goal for the theatre piece.

Neat visualization of low frequency storm sound in our atmosphere

20 Hz observes a geo-magnetic storm occurring in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Working with data collected from the CARISMA radio array and interpreted as audio, we hear tweeting and rumbles caused by incoming solar wind, captured at the frequency of 20 Hertz. Generated directly by the sound, tangible and sculptural forms emerge suggestive of scientific visualisations. As different frequencies interact both visually and aurally, complex patterns emerge to create interference phenomena that probe the limits of our perception.

*warning: there's some flickering in the second half. possibly seizure / Kundalini inducing.

Random clips of cool theatre I like

Here are some really interesting trailers for theatre pieces that combine a lot of the elements I want to work with in KCycle, including projections, dance-theatre/mime/physical theatre, original musical compositions and stage illusions, and are exceptionally beautiful and surprising, yet in most cases simple.

Words Fail Me

Words fail me.

Truth is never stated,

Words are over rated

And if this line should end in mid
No one of us would stop flying.

Formed wails,
Words fail me.

Feral wisdom: Dream is flow.

"an entirely new universe"

I love this quote from German composer Carl Maria von Weber. He's talking about his ideal for opera and describes it as:

"...a fully rounded and self-contained work of art in which all the ingredients furnished by the contributing arts disappear in the process of fusion, and in thus perishing help to form an entirely new universe." (italics are mine)

Sounds like a pretty cool description of our little project and what we may hope to achieve...not to mention the idea of "dying" to experience something beyond the familiar.

cheers,
Mark

Tunnels

I keep getting images of tunnels. Perhaps someone crawling out of a tunnel or confronting a tunnel. To me it serves the same function as a veil, or something to confront and overcome/pass through.
This one is from a neat tunnel house that some guys built. More images.

Our first meeting, and follow-up

Hey there, brilliant band of co-conspirators,

Below are some notes I made from last night's gathering. They're a bit rough, but I think they cover the important stuff, so feel free to use them as a reference/reminder if they're helpful.

In the meantime, to help us get together an accurate contact list, please send me a blank note from the ONE email address you want us to use as your contact addy for this project. In the subject line, please put your full name and the ONE phone number you'd also like us to use as a means to reach you. I'll put the updated contact list together and send it around to everyone as soon as I've heard from you.

Great to meet/see everyone last night. I'm thinking people's minds are going to get blown between May 31 and June 9.

cheers,
Mark

Meeting One

Monday, Sept. 5, 2011

Chrystene
Bernie
Jason
Brendan
Mark
Johanna
Joanne

i. Logistics & schedule

Show is May 31-June 9, Thursdays thru Saturdays
Script to Globe by mid-February 2012: then we go into rehearsal until end of May
Developmental artists can then remain involved or not at their discretion
We've been invited to San Francisco for the fall of 2012!
We want a 'mobile 'show for fringe festivals, etc.

iii. Creative vision & development experiment

We all have until October 3 to play with our material from Chrystene and generate some ideas.
In the meantime, get involved in the blog! Post ideas, found materials, questions, discussion points, etc.

Homework:
Re-collect a time you felt lost, misunderstood, out-of-body, isolated, near-death experience: any moment in which you connected with another realm or disconnected from this one: any little moment that was profound and mind-altering in some way.
With that moment in your mind/spirit, play with the writings you've received from Chrystene and generate some sort of creative content.
Along with that content, bring some sort of object that relates to it.
Don't try to "tell a story" or be concerned about narrative, sense, or quality. Just an honest, simple piece.

Budget & grant options:
Sask Arts Board has closed down their artistic venture grants programs
Might be a grant for new projects, possible/probable Oct. 15 deadline
Mark will set up a meeting with Arts Board
Other possible funding sources:
SaskCulture? City of Regina? Corporate sponsors? Bahai, Unitarian Church, St. Michael's Retreat?

General discussion:
Chrystene's image: circular, cyclical, a round playing space
Joanne is also intrigued by circular, "enclosing" spaces: Self-isolation, perceptions changed by total deafness.
Can we deprive audience of a sense, replace it with another sense? Play with sound and sight so that it misleads or misdirects?
"Troughs" that people can step in to generate sounds. Set could possibly be an "instrument" or feature numerous "instruments" that can play Jason's compositions.

Visual/auditory illusions: what's real and what isn't?

Time as non-linear

Mess with people's minds and what they perceive as "real"

Illusions the audience knows are illusions, see how they're done

Wind in a black theatre, or sudden smells.

Will likely do most of our work individually and through the blog, gather monthly to find connections, touch base, etc.

Next meeting: Monday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m. at the Film Pool

Mark: Will develop a calendar for the blog and search for possible rehearsal spaces

Creative Team coming together!

Hey everyone! KaleidoCycle is HAPPENING.

We've signed the contract and submitted the poster graphic, and are currently finalizing the creative team. Just waiting to hear back from a couple of people to see whether and how they would like to be involved, then we'll be off and running.

I'll be in touch soon with a few options for a first meeting time and date, where I just want to reconvene, check in with everyone, touch on a few administrative and budget issues (we are currently working on lining up some help with grant writing, and thank you to all of you who have volunteered to contribute in that area as well -- I really believe that every person involved with this project should be compensated for their time and energy, not to mention all of the creative and life learning that each of us has been through that we will be bringing to the project).

The other and much more exciting purpose of the first meeting will be to discuss the creative visions for the show, and to give each artist their first bit of stimulus writing to kick off their first creative response. I'd like to do this soon in the hopes that we can meet up one more time to show what we've come up with before I leave town for a few weeks on September 14th.

So no need to respond yet...

Just watch this space!

And here's a new cool video for you to check out as well. It's a video of a cool shadow-performance blended with projected animations. Just another way to use a variety of media to create lovely stage illusions with tricks that are enchanting for the spectator, as the tricks themselves are transparent, yet the result is magical:

until next time...

adventure!

Poster for Globe

Here's the design submitted to the Globe for promotion. I'm guessing this or something close to it will appear on postcards around town and their website. I know they will want to change a few informational elements to fit with their standard advertisements.
Feel free to post what you think.

Creative inspirational notes from director Anne Bogart

"One cannot look directly at the truly big human issues any more than one can look directly at the sun. In order to see the sun you look slightly to the side. Between the sun and where you are looking is the perception of the sun. In art and in the theatre we use metaphor as the thing to the side. Through metaphor we see the truth about our condition. The word metaphor comes from the Greek meta (above) and pherein (to carry). Metaphor is that which is carried above the literalness of life. Art is metaphor and metaphor is transformation.

"... most artists would agree that their work does not proceed from an idea of what the finished product will be; rather it emerges out of a passionate excitement about the subject matter.

"The poet’s poem is wrung from him by the subject which excites him."
- Samuel Alexander

"To generate the indispensable excitement there must be something at stake, at risk, something momentous and uncertain. A sure thing does not arouse us emotionally.

"There is no disgrace in not knowing what you are doing and not having all the answers. But your passion and excitement about something will take you the distance through uncertainty. If you are insecure and do not really know what you are doing, it’s fine. Just try to work with an interest in exactitude. Be exact with what you do not know. Realism on the stage is generated, not by a general feeling for reality or truth, but, rather, it emerges in the act of exactitude and decisiveness with something that excites you."

Re: ASL Poetry by John Maucere

Take a look at these two ASL "poems" by Maucere. He came to Regina last year for our 75th Anniversary (Saskatoon Association of the Deaf). He is an outstanding performer. Note that he uses about three handshapes only to represent different concepts. This is called "visual rhythm". Here are the links:

Collaborators' first meeting: November 7, 2010

On Sunday November 7th the first group of six collaborators met for the first time at the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative on Scarth Street in Regina. The purpose of the meeting was to eat cheese and toss around their first ideas around the initial concept proposed by Chrystene Ells for the lab-style development of a collaboratively created installation-influenced performance, tentatively titled 'kaleidocycle,' to be pitched to the Globe Theatre on November 19th.

In attendance were:
  • Johanna Bundon: dancer, performer, choreographer
  • Candace Cardoso: designer for theatre and film
  • Jason Cullimore: composer with a background in the study of music psychology
  • Chrystene Ells: writer/director/producer
  • berny hi.: experimental filmmaker, animator and projection artist
  • Joanne Weber: culturally Deaf poet and author and teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Meeting notes

1. Chrystene presented a few images and ideas as starting points for the discussion:
  • overall feel of show as first envisioned:
    • immediacy and a sense of “no one knows what is going to happen”
    • old school magic/special effects (ie: fire dress from Shockheaded Peter)
    • a sense of beauty but also a lost feeling...
    • ASL Poetry combined with dance, projection, live sound effects and music, lighting effects, and possibly shadow puppets or shadow performance of some kind
  • media: analogue: no synth, no digital, if possible, ie:
    • 16mm film projection/performance
    • live foley pits, non-traditional sound makers/instruments
  • set and design:
    • costumes and set pieces that work as projection screens
    • modular set pieces that can be combined in different ways to create different environments
  • other/miscellaneous:
    • bicycle on track
    • harness or suspension, things hanging from the ceiling
    • non-textual project
    • constant shattering and regrouping
    • in-the-round? central performance pit
2. Also Chrystene presented a few preliminary ideas about how the developmental process might work:
  • Collaborators and Performers - different but potentially overlapping
    • collaborators: generators of visual and auditory material (mud and pearls)
    • performers: artists who will meet for development and rehearsal of material, and perform in the final production
  • Collaborator Volley - possible example of how it might work
    • each collaborator takes 2 weeks to respond within his/her media to a concept (such as a moment when she/he brushed the divine or simply went crazy -- good or bad -- in connection with art or creative endeavors)
    • at the end of the two weeks, through some process of selection (maybe just names in a hat), each collaborator is given the work of another collaborator to respond to
    • some concepts might make the entire round of collaborators and some will fall aside... but as time goes on we will generate a lot of material wherein we’ll find more and more connections - some will be useful and some won’t fit, but it’s the mud in the pearls we’d be after
    • eventually the performers would be brought into the process to respond with the director to the material that has been generated, in order to create a script and a performance that can be further developed and honed
  • Time and energy commitments should in this way fit everyone’s needs or desires, from being intrinsically involved from day one to just working on the project when time and life allows
    • the dream or concept is to bring in designers, media artists, and composers early and make them collaborators from the beginning, rather than the folks who have to scramble at the end to augment and facilitate the performance which has already been created by others
3. Some of the responses brought to the first meeting were:
Joanne talked about language and neurolinguistics - what part of the brain does language come from?
  • when Joanne uses ASL she feels like she has a split personality
  • she feels it is connected to an older or more primitive or more immediate and more direct part of the brain
  • the image of the tree - synapses and structure
  • does phrasing make sense in terms of timing, grabbing the beginning of a word or something?
  • Primitivism
NOTES: See thesis and other research by Loretta Paoli, MFA
check out the book “Seeing Voices” by Oliver Sax

Candace had an image of a picture of the brain
  • as if there were a split personality and different parts light up different colours, with different characters associated with the brain sections by colour
  • also images of moon and moonlight, of night shade and water
  • she likes the idea of the bike and riding a bicycle in the silence
Jason talked about auditory illusions
  • apparently, like optical illusions there are also auditory illusions such as Shepherd tones that sound like they are either -- or both at the same time -- ascending or descending in pitch
  • he likes the idea of the performers using the sets and spokes and foley and found sounds around the stage mixed with taped stuff for starting off points - could interact with or develop it in a call-and-response way
  • mentioned that there are recordings of what hearing afflictions, such as Tinnitis, sound like
  • mentioned that there are a ton of different Psychological effects that accompany altered states of consciousness etc,. from literature on auditory physiology and sonic effects
Johanna talked about language and the idea of going sublanguage
  • she also talked about the use of hands in various types of performance
    • brought in Barba's book on Theatre Anthropology - Joanne noted that the pictures of hands and gestures from various Balinese and other dance styles are all hand shapes that are also used in ASL
  • talked about working with performers in a Lab style setting and working without words or text
  • said that she is very interested in performing in the piece
berny talked about various aspects of projection performance
  • mentioned projection techniques such as the use of mirrors, disco balls, and prisms to cast multiple iterations of a projection image around a room, such as creating dozens of tiny spaceships from a single projection of a spaceship with the use of a disco ball in front of a projector
  • expressed interest in various experiments with projection and light and stage illusions
  • also mentioned the McGurk Effect (see it here on our Cool Videos page), where what we see influences what we think we hear (as in video of someone saying FaFaFa to audio of BaBaBa - and we think we hear FaFaFa
In preparation for the pitch Chrystene is collecting any ideas, links, images, videos, and/or other thoughts to put together for an 8-10 minute presentation to the Sandbox Series jury at the Globe Theatre at 10am on November 19th. This blog was created as a storage place and communication centre for the collaborators to post ideas and other resources.
Some elements that we discussed including in the pitch session are:
  • a piece of music by Jason that is based on a Shepherd's Tone and includes a short composition (30 seconds) constructed of analogue non-musical instrument based sounds (such as, perhaps, sounds made on bicycle spokes)
  • a very short (30 second) interpretation of a few lines of one of Joanne's poems about being deaf, presented in the style of ASL Poetry and performed by Joanne at the pitch
  • perhaps 30 seconds of examples of projection performance presented by berny
Cheeses in attendance: Swiss, Gouda, Jalapeno Jack, Double Cream Brie, and Chive Boursin (the clear favourite), served with rice crackers and French bread, paired with Old Tyme Ginger Ale, cranberry juice and soda water
until next time!

Proposal to the Globe Theatre: Oct. 22, 2010

k a l e i d o c y c l e
(Greek: KALOS beautiful + EIDOS form + KUKLOS cycle, circle)
a response to the call for submissions for Globe Theatre's 2011-12 Shumiatcher Sandbox Series

On the evening of July 15, 2010, I was at an opening reception at Mysteria Gallery in Regina when the bottom dropped out of everything and I found myself simultaneously inhabiting two realities: I was flying around and around the gallery like Superman, and at the same time standing still, looking at a painting. The multiple and entirely unexpected seizures I had over the next ten hours dramatically changed my life, sense of identity, and perspective on everything. Several things happened immediately:
  • the first response of my brain was to close down my speech centre; I immediately lost the ability to speak for hours at a time; at some point however I realized that I could still use rudimentary American Sign Language (ASL), through which I could communicate through an interpreter until I more or less regained fluency in spoken English
  • finding it difficult to sleep for over two months, I often slipped instead into the Regina summer nights on timeless bicycle rides until dawn brought the dog walkers and joggers and an end to the magic and secrets of the black streets
  • I found myself encountering a changed world, overwhelmingly beautiful and surreal, visceral and intense on every level, and I saw clearly the intrinsic interconnectedness of everything
  • I lost a familiar connection with time, and was not only unable to hold onto moments as they passed beyond memory within a minute or two, but found myself unable to anticipate or plan or build; even a simple task such as making coffee was incalculably difficult and required all of my attention to complete.
Eventually I was diagnosed with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (an affliction of many artists and writers, including Dostoyevsky and Lewis Carroll, TLE for short), a condition that rarely brings on externally discernable seizures but which often induces deeply personal experiences of the divine, and obsessive bursts of creativity and energy. The question naturally arises whether the seizures create hallucinations of divine or ecstatic experience (in short, a form of madness), or whether encountering the sacred in the physical world manifests as a medical anomaly categorized as seizures, but which in fact may be a normal human response to a profound spiritual experience. Time is passing and I am ‘healing.’ With a sense of sad loss, I am slowly returning to a state of capability that includes teaching at the university, writing grant applications, driving a car, making plans, and working on creative projects. However, it is becoming apparent that the seizures have left or created a crack through which I can still extend myself to touch that exquisite and mysterious world that seems to co-exist with my daily reality. In fact as I learn to incorporate the existence of this portal into my life in general, the schism created socially between others and me is much greater than any break inside my own psyche; I have been labeled ‘manic,’ ‘dead,’ ‘permanently altered,’ ‘subtly different,’ and ‘an entirely different person.’ Because my experience of the world was so radically changed, for some time I had a sneaking suspicion that I had actually died in the gallery and was wandering in some portal between worlds.

KaleidoCyle is partially a response to and engagement with this experience, as well as on current clinical and philosophical engagements with TLE, but I am also interested in the moments of 'divine inspiration' experienced by other artists, particularly the collaborators on this project, with their many different backgrounds. The production would rely heavily on the development process, signaling a return to my early performance/ensemble experiments based on the work of the Odin Theatre under Eugenio Barba, exploratory work I conducted for over a decade starting in 1984. Drawing on this and other related work such as that of Anne Bogart and the SITI group, as well as the stage craft of early Julie Taymor projects, I hope to conduct a Lab with an interdisciplinary group of Saskatchewan-based artists, working collaboratively over several months to create a performance piece based on the above subjects.

Although a good deal of the meat of the project will be based on material generated through the lab process, the production will largely rely on non-verbal, non-textual communication, with an emphasis on images, bodies, sounds and music. Definite and intrinsic elements of the finished work include a bicycle being ridden onstage, live music and foley/sound effects, live performance-projection of film footage, a small ensemble of physical performers, intricate and lovely costume designs, and some form of ASL Poetry (a performative style of signing developed within the Deaf community that spans dance, poetry, storytelling, and ASL - here's an example). Other elements might include harness /suspension performance, puppetry and/or mask work, and live painting or the live creation of visual art. There will be some element of the surreal juxtaposed with a representation of waking life, ideally recreating for the viewer some representation of the experience of a TLE event and fallout, or a brush with the muses.

I envision the playing space as being very simple, with perhaps nothing more than a few modular, moveable set pieces, such as lightweight screens to act as rear- and front-projection and/or shadow-puppet surfaces, so other than the costumes and a few interesting props, such as the bike, puppets, and potential suspension systems, the actual cost to mount the show would be relatively minimal. However, it would be important to me to pay the collaborators for both the development phase and the production.
